The Order’s Response to the Irish Government in the Light of the Ryan Report
The Order has written to the Minister of Education and Science, Mr. Batt O’Keeffe, in regard to making a further voluntary contribution in the light of the Ryan Report.
It has confirmed to the Minister of Education and Science that, in addition to the €900,000 already contributed by the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God to the Redress Scheme, the Order will contribute €1 million as an ex-gratia donation to the proposed independent Charitable Trust.
The Order has also confirmed to the Expert Panel that the Statement of Affairs prepared by PricewaterhouseCooper “shows a complete and fair view of the financial resource situation of the Order, and also confirms the Order’s assets, cash and property are committed to the services of people, including children with mental health issues, intellectual disabilities, the elderly and other vulnerable people. However, as one of a number of Congregations and state-sponsored agencies, which has provided care services and education to children throughout the State, some of whom, to our regret, suffered abuse while in care, we wish to participate in attempting to bring healing and make reparation to those who suffered.”
