Saint John of God Hospital - Ireland

Nurse Graduation Jan 2014 mr

Best wishes to our 12 student nurses who graduated on 3 December 2013.   This group is from the class of 2009 and has spent the past four years between UCD for the academic component of their training course and Saint John of God Hospital for the clinical component.  Although the Hospital would be considered the primary clinical site, all our students are facilitated with placements in the Cluain Mhuire Community Mental Health service with whom we have a very close working relationship.

While the students were on specialist placements in Stage 2 and 3 (2nd and 3rd year) some had placements in:
• Saint John of God Kildare Service for experience in nursing clients with dual diagnosis
• Saint John of God Lucena Clinic Community Child and Adolescent Service
• REACH for experience in rehabilitative approach in aiding clients return to the workforce.
• Central Mental Hospital for forensic  nursing

There are also specialist placements within the Hospital itself, i.e. the Eating Disorder Recovery Centre, the Psychosis Unit and the Adolescent Unit.

Everyone in the group had a placement in the Marlay Nursing Home for care of the older person and St Vincent’s University Hospital for experience in general nursing.

When they commenced the internship period of their training, the group joined the nursing team in a more direct manner and became part of the nursing complement at the clinical sites.  This transition period from student to staff nurse was aided by the support received from nursing colleagues both in the Hospital and the Cluain Mhuire service.
